What’s Inside This Guide
📰 This Week’s Headlines
- F-1 interview slots are tightening fast. New Delhi’s US embassy is seeing a surge in student visa bookings ahead of the August–September intake. If you haven’t booked your interview yet, do it today — not this week, today.
- UK’s Graduate Route visa is confirmed safe — for now. After months of speculation, the Home Office reaffirmed it will not scrap the Graduate Route in 2026. Indian students can still work 2 years post-study (3 years for PhD holders).
- SEVIS fee is still USD 350. No change despite earlier rumours. Pay via fmjfee.com at least 3 business days before your F-1 interview. Keep the receipt — consular officers do ask.
- UK English language rules tightened for Tier-4 institutions. Some lower-ranked universities have been removed from the Confirmed Acceptance for Studies (CAS) list. Always verify your university’s sponsorship status at the UKVI register before paying fees.
- Fall 2026 is the most competitive US intake in five years. Applications from South Asia are up 18% YoY according to NAFSA data. Waitlists are moving slowly — if you’re on one, send a Letter of Continued Interest this week.
Stat to share: Indian students are now the #1 international student group in the USA — over 3.3 lakh enrolled as of 2025–26.
🕐 Embassy & Visa Wait Times
US Embassy, New Delhi — as of May 18, 2026:
- F-1 Student Visa: ~4 to 6 weeks for an interview appointment. Processing after the interview: typically 2–5 business days if no administrative processing is triggered.
- B-1/B-2 Tourist Visa: Still extremely backlogged. Current wait for a New Delhi interview appointment: estimated 400+ days. If a tourist visa is part of your plan before studying, apply now — not after admission.
UK Student Visa (from India) — as of May 18, 2026:
- Standard service: 3 weeks from biometrics appointment.
- Priority service: 5 business days (costs approx. £500 extra — worth it if your CAS was issued late).
Stat to share: Over 60% of F-1 visa refusals in India involve missing or inconsistent financial documents. One folder, organised correctly, changes everything.
📅 Deadlines You Can Still Make
- University of Arizona (USA) — Rolling admissions open. Still accepting Fall 2026 applications for most graduate engineering and business programmes. Decisions in 2–3 weeks.
- Arizona State University (USA) — Final deadline: May 31, 2026 for select MS programmes including Data Science and Computer Engineering. Strong scholarship consideration for 3.5+ GPA applicants.
- University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK) — September 2026 intake open. Popular with Punjab students for MSc in International Business and Engineering Management. No GMAT required for most programmes.
- Coventry University (UK) — Accepting until July 2026 for their September intake. UK Student Visa CAS issued within 4 weeks of unconditional offer. Relatively accessible IELTS requirement: 6.0 overall.
- If you’re targeting January 2027 (UK Spring intake) — now is exactly the right time to shortlist and start your personal statement. Most top UK universities open January applications in June–July.
Stat to share: Students who apply in May–June are 3x more likely to receive merit scholarships than those who apply in August — budgets run out by then.
🎓 University Spotlight: University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas)
Location: Richardson, Texas (Dallas suburb) | Type: Public Research University (Carnegie R1)
- Acceptance rate for Indians: Overall acceptance is ~79%, but STEM graduate programmes (CS, Software Engineering, Data Science) are significantly more competitive — plan for a 40–55% admit rate at the graduate level.
- Annual cost in INR (approx.): Tuition ~₹17.5 lakh + living expenses ~₹10–12 lakh = total ₹27–30 lakh per year. Assistantships (TA/RA) cover tuition fully and pay a monthly stipend — very common in CS and Engineering departments.
- Most popular courses for Indians: MS Computer Science, MS Software Engineering, MS Business Analytics, MS Telecommunications Engineering, MBA. The CS programme is consistently ranked among the top 50 in the USA.
- The surprising fact: UT Dallas sits inside the “Silicon Prairie” — a tech corridor home to Texas Instruments (founded here), AT&T, Samsung, Fujitsu, and over 8,000 tech companies. On-campus career fairs regularly draw 200+ employers. Many Indian graduates are placed within 90 days of graduation without relocating from the Dallas area.
Stat to share: UT Dallas’ Naveen Jindal School of Management is one of the few US business schools where CFA pass rates consistently beat the global average — useful if you’re targeting finance careers.
💱 Exchange Rate Watch
As of May 18, 2026 (indicative mid-market rates):
- USD / INR: ₹84.20 — Stable this week. A ₹28 lakh/year UT Dallas budget translates to roughly USD 33,250. Factor in a 2–3% forex conversion cost when remitting through your bank.
- GBP / INR: ₹106.80 — The pound has held firm against the rupee in May. A UK university charging £18,000/year in tuition = approx. ₹19.2 lakh — plus ₹8–10 lakh living costs in cities like Manchester or Glasgow (London adds ₹3–4 lakh more).
What this means practically: If you are remitting fees in the next 30 days, locking in a forward contract with your bank or using a regulated forex service (not a street dealer) can save you ₹15,000–₹40,000 on a typical year-one payment. Ask your bank about “forward booking” — it’s free and available to students.
Stat to share: A ₹1 shift in USD/INR changes the cost of a 2-year US Master’s by roughly ₹1.7 lakh. The rate you book your first wire at matters more than people think.
💡 Quick Tip of the Week
Get your DS-160 reviewed before you submit it — not after.
Most F-1 visa rejections we see at ESM Overseas trace back to errors or ambiguous answers in the DS-160, not the interview itself. The form asks about travel history, ties to India, and intended activities in the US — and the exact wording of your answers matters. Once submitted, it cannot be edited. Before you click Submit: have a qualified counsellor or experienced friend review the “Purpose of Trip,” “Who will pay,” and “Previous US visa” sections line by line. Spending 30 minutes on this review is worth more than three mock interviews.
Bonus: If you’ve had a US visa refused before, always disclose it — consular databases are linked globally. Concealment is an automatic permanent bar.
