📰 This Week’s Headlines

  • F-1 interview slots tightening fast. New Delhi US Embassy is showing 4–6 week waits for student visa interviews — if your Fall 2026 classes start in August, book your slot this week, not next.
  • UK Home Office clears Summer 2026 application backlog. Student Route processing times have returned to 15 business days for standard applications after a brief May slowdown — good news for anyone still waiting on a decision.
  • US CPT/OPT rule under review. USCIS has signalled a review of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) usage guidelines for F-1 students. No changes yet, but students on or planning CPT should stay close to their DSO.
  • Canada vs USA applicant shift continues. Industry data shows a 14% year-on-year rise in Indian students choosing US universities over Canadian ones as Canadian study permit caps bite — demand for F-1 guidance at an all-time high.
  • UK Graduate Route stays intact. After months of parliamentary debate, the UK Government confirmed the 2-year post-study work visa (Graduate Route) will NOT be abolished for 2026–27 intake students — a relief for everyone mid-application.

⏱️ Embassy & Visa Wait Times

US Embassy, New Delhi — F-1 (Student Visa): Interview appointment wait time is currently 28–42 days. If you have an August start date, the window is closing quickly. Apply for your DS-160 and pay the MRV fee this week to secure a July slot.

US Embassy, New Delhi — B-1/B-2 (Tourist/Business Visa): Wait times are running at 90–120 days for new applicants. Renewals and applications at other posts (Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad) are marginally shorter — check usvisascheduling.com for the latest slot availability across all posts.

UK Student Route (from India): Standard processing: 15 business days (3 weeks). Priority service: 5 business days (₹15,000–₹20,000 extra). Super Priority (next working day) is available at select UKVI centres — worth it if your CAS has arrived and your course starts in September.

Stat to share: Over 1.1 lakh Indian students are projected to start UK university programmes in September 2026 — the highest ever for the autumn intake.

📅 Deadlines You Can Still Make

Fall 2026 (August/September start) — Rolling Admissions still open: Several mid-tier and state universities in the US continue to accept applications on a rolling basis. If your I-20 is not yet issued, prioritise schools with 4–6 week I-20 turnaround times.

  • Arizona State University — Fall 2026 rolling deadline: June 30, 2026 for most graduate programmes.
  • University of Missouri — International graduate applications accepted until July 01, 2026 for select departments.
  • San Jose State University — International applications for Fall 2026 closed; Spring 2027 opens August 01, 2026.
  • UK — September 2026 intake: Most UK universities have firm offers out, but several Russell Group institutions (Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham) are still accepting through UCAS Extra and direct portals until June 30, 2026.
  • Spring 2027 (January start) — US: Early-bird deadlines start appearing from August. Now is the right time to build your shortlist and get your SOP reviewed.

Stat to share: Students who submit applications 6+ weeks before a deadline have a 23% higher admit rate than last-minute applicants, per NACAC data.

🎓 University Spotlight: San Jose State University (USA)

Location: San Jose, California — right in the heart of Silicon Valley. If proximity to Google, Apple, and 7,000+ tech startups matters to your career plan, SJSU is hard to ignore.

Acceptance rate for international students: Approximately 50–55%, making it moderately selective. The engineering and computer science departments are more competitive — expect GPA 3.3+ and strong SOP if that’s your target.

Annual cost (approx. in INR): Tuition + fees for international students: ~₹19–21 lakh/year. Add living costs in San Jose (one of the US’s most expensive cities) and the total lands around ₹32–36 lakh/year. On-campus housing helps control costs.

Most popular courses for Indian students: MS in Computer Science, MS in Software Engineering, MBA, MS in Data Analytics, BS in Electrical Engineering. SJSU’s engineering college has ABET accreditation — important for PE licensing if you plan to work in the US long-term.

One surprising fact: SJSU has the highest percentage of alumni employed in Silicon Valley tech firms of any California State University campus — ahead of several better-known UC campuses. LinkedIn’s HQ is literally a 10-minute walk from the main gate.

💱 Exchange Rate Watch

USD/INR this week: ₹83.60 – ₹83.90. The rupee has held relatively stable against the dollar through early June. For a student sending $20,000/year in tuition, this week’s rate means roughly ₹16.72 lakh — compare that to ₹16.2 lakh at the 82.00 level from late 2025. Every rupee matters; lock rates via a forex card or wire transfer when you see a dip below ₹83.50.

GBP/INR this week: ₹106.20 – ₹107.00. The pound has firmed slightly post the UK budget revision. A £15,000 first-year tuition payment now costs approximately ₹16.05 lakh — ₹75,000 more than it did six months ago. UK students: plan your first-year transfer now rather than closer to September.

Stat to share: A 1-rupee swing in USD/INR adds or removes ₹83,000 on a standard ₹83 lakh US degree — reason enough to track rates weekly.

💡 Quick Tip of the Week

Get your financial documents notarised now — before the July rush. US consular officers scrutinise bank statements, fixed deposit certificates, and property documents heavily during peak visa season (June–August). Statements must typically show a consistent balance for 3–6 months — not a sudden large deposit. If your funds were moved recently, prepare a brief cover letter explaining the source. Notarised and translated copies should be ready at least 2 weeks before your interview date, not the night before.
